  • A celebration of Pagtililipon, Pagbinuligay, kag Paglaum filled the JBLFMU Molo Covered Court last December 23, 2025, as we spent a meaningful day with our community partners from Brgy.

Trapiche (Oton, Iloilo), Brgy. So oc (Arevalo, Iloilo City), and Brgy. Agboy (Leon, Iloilo). The participants, composed of women's groups and ERDA Scholars, brought joy, inspiration, and purpose to this yearโ€™s celebration.

The Christmas spirit was felt through the joyful voices of the Caroling Contest, the heartfelt message shared during the Values Sharing by our esteemed speaker, and the smiles during the Gift Giving Activity that reminded us of the importance of sharing hope and kindness this season.

This celebration became possible because of the generosity, involvement, and shared efforts of many. We sincerely appreciate our volunteers for their dedication; the Department Heads, faculty members, and staff for their active involvement; and everyone who extended their support and shared their blessings in any form and style.

We are honored to feature Miss Elma P. Arboleras, who completed her degree in BS Customs Administration and was named Most Outstanding Graduate of the Class of 1989, embodying the enduring values and quiet strength of a true Lacsonian.

Miss Elma recalls that choosing John B. Molo was not a calculated decision, but a deeply felt one. Accompanied by her grandmother and still uncertain about where to study, she stepped onto the campus of what was then Iloilo Maritime Academy and immediately felt at home. The sense of community, the openness of the campus, and the warmth of both students and faculty gave her a feeling she trusted. Looking back decades later, she affirms that it was one of the best decisions she ever made.

Her student life at John B. Molo was both challenging and fulfilling. It was a time of growth that went far beyond academics. The discipline of her studies was balanced by meaningful involvement in campus life, shaping her into a resilient, adaptable, and principled individual. She found purpose in service through the Philippine National Red Cross, pride and lifelong friendships as a pioneer member of the Handumanan Cultural Group, and focus and creativity in the school publication. These experiences not only sustained her education through scholarships, but also helped form the person and professional she would become.

Among the Lacsonian core values, integrity became her strongest guide. Throughout her career, she encountered moments when compromising principles would have been easier. Each time, she chose the ethical path. This commitment earned her trust, credibility, and a reputation built not on convenience, but on character.

Like many graduates, leaving the campus brought uncertainty. Stepping into the professional world felt daunting, yet the confidence and preparation she gained at John B. Molo allowed her to move forward with purpose. Her career journey has spanned various industries, eventually bringing her back to the maritime sector, where she continues to make a meaningful impact.

Her achievements speak volumes. She was recognized as one of the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines (TOSP), becoming the first from JBLFMU-Molo, Inc. and the first from Iloilo City to receive the honor. She has earned national and international awards for innovation, secured patents and trademarks for her invented bus management system, iBus, which was later featured in the World Intellectual Property Organization magazine, and has been instrumental in facilitating the largest single project in the 115-year history of a leading European maritime company. Yet, she considers her greatest accomplishment to be remaining principled through every challenge.

    To the current generation of Lacsonian students, Miss Elma leaves this message. • January 15, 2025 โ€” It was a vivid morning of crossโ€‘cultural learning and action as 21 JBLFMUโ€‘Molo students and 15 Osaka Seikei University Global Tourism and Management students exchanged perspectives across time zones, sharing personal experiences and concrete pledges for more sustainable lifestyles and travel practices during this academic year's 2nd Joint Advanced English class between the two universities.

Through guided discussions led by Dr. Joseph Ring, Dr. Louise May Lim, Prof. Weezie Kay Manucan, and Engr. Allan Roberto, participants connected everyday choicesโ€”opting for lowโ€‘impact transport, booking communityโ€‘run or sustainable hotel stays, buying local produce, practicing cleanโ€‘asโ€‘youโ€‘go (CLAYGO), and conserving energy and moneyโ€”to larger tourism outcomes such as reduced carbon footprints and stronger local economies.

Students critically examined the harm caused by irresponsible travel influencers, identifying specific problems such as graffiti and vandalism, spotlighting fragile sites that fuel overโ€‘tourism, and trivializing or commodifying culture. They proposed practical countermeasures, including responsible content guidelines, respectful photography practices (asking for permission before taking pictures and respecting sacred sites), โ€œleave no traceโ€ campaigns, and rapid community reporting of harmful posts.

Interactive segments reinforced personal accountability where participants typed oneโ€‘line pledges in the chat and volunteered short action plans aloud, creating a shared commitment map linking individual habits to measurable community benefits.

By the sessionโ€™s close, the group had turned theory into practical, relevant strategies that demonstrate how collective, everyday choices can curb destructive trends and protect destinations. The class ended energized, with clear next steps for advocacy, education, and onโ€‘theโ€‘ground practice to sustain travel that respects people and place.

This week, we proudly feature Lymne Dahl D. Tanes, a graduate of BS Cruise Ship Management, Class of 2007. She currently serves as Chief Stewardess under the Luxury Yacht Group, with 17 years of experience in the yacht industry, a career shaped by perseverance, discipline, and commitment to excellence.

Miss Lymneโ€™s journey to John B. Molo began with uncertainty. She initially considered Nursing and Tourism, but a family member introduced her to the Cruise Ship Management program. Coming from a family of seafarers, she realized that the sea had always been part of her story. Choosing John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University Molo became a decision guided by heritage, courage, and a desire to explore opportunities beyond the shore.

Her student life at John B. Molo was both meaningful and transformative. She built friendships that felt like family and learned under mentors who were firm in discipline yet deeply supportive. Each day brought lessons inside and outside the classroom, helping her grow in confidence, responsibility, and self-awareness.

Beyond academics, Miss Lymne immersed herself in campus life. As a Red Cross volunteer, she learned compassion and service. As a cheer dancer, she developed teamwork and confidence. Representing the BS Cruise Ship Management program in career fairs strengthened her communication skills and pride in her course. These experiences helped shape her character and prepared her for the demands of life at sea.

In her professional journey, perseverance became her guiding value. She faced exhaustion, homesickness, cultural challenges, and even a life-threatening maritime emergency. Yet she remained steady, rising from an entry-level stewardess to leadership roles through consistency and dedication. As she shares, โ€œPerseverance turns trials into triumphs and setbacks into stepping stones.โ€

Today, Miss Lymne leads with professionalism and heart as a Chief Stewardess, earning trust and respect in an international work environment. Reflecting on her journey, she credits her Lacsonian foundation for teaching her discipline, integrity, and resilience. She reminds students that the sea will test both skill and character, and preparation makes the difference.

To the current generation of Lacsonian students, her message is clear. โ€œBe hungry to learn, humble to improve, and brave enough to take the first step. Carry integrity in your character, perseverance in your heart, and excellence in your work.โ€ Her story stands as a reminder that with courage and values, one can rise, lead, and inspire.

From a young dreamer who once chose her course because of a uniform that caught her eye, to a proud Cum Laude graduate who discovered that true education is grounded in values, discipline, and faith, Merry Crisโ€™ journey reflects courage, growth, and purpose. Her years in the university were filled with meaningful milestones, leadership roles, Tourism Fairs, yearly tours, and the unforgettable Initiation Rites that shaped her into a true-blooded Lacsonian.

Guided by the core value of Godliness, she placed God at the center of every decision. That faith carried her beyond the classroom and into a path many did not expect. After graduation, she embraced the challenge of entering the Philippine National Police and became a member of Class 2015-01 Mandirigma. Today, she serves with honor and dedication, assigned to various units and currently fulfilling her duty as a Women and Children Protection Desk PNCO. Through her service, she has helped rescue victims, filed cases that sought justice for women and children, and stood as a resource speaker in communities and schools.

Her perseverance led her to pass the NAPOLCOM Entrance Exam, Police Officer Exam, and Senior Police Officer Exam. Her discipline and integrity continue to define her decade of service in the police force. She is also a proud homeowner and car owner, proving that commitment and hard work bear fruit.

PSSg. Merry Cris P. Guelos-Asturias embodies the strength, compassion, and resilience of a Lacsonian woman. Her story reminds us that paths may change, but purpose remains. As she shares with the current generation, pursue what your heart truly desires, commit yourself fully, put God at the center, and make your parents proud.

This Womenโ€™s Month, we celebrate her courage to choose her own path, her dedication to protect the vulnerable, and her unwavering faith that continues to guide her journey.

Together, we move forward with purpose and uphold a future where every woman is valued, heard, and empowered.
